365 Day Photo Project

Did You Know… Honey Bees are the only insect that produces food eaten by humans. Honey is the only food that includes all substances necessary to sustain life, including enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and water; and it’s the only food that contains the antioxidant pinocembrin, associated with improved brain function.
A honey bee has a body of three parts; head, thorax and abdomen. It has three pairs of jointed legs, two antennae and two pairs of wings. It has five eyes, which can see ultraviolet light. The spectrum of color visible to a bee does not include red, but red reflects ultraviolet light which the bee can see.

A bee can touch, taste, feel and smell, but cannot hear. Instead they rely on vibrations.

Bees use the sun and landmarks to find their way, they communicate with each other though ‘dance’. Honey bees live in colonies and co-operate with each other for the good of the colony as a whole. Older and wiser bees teach young honey bees how to make honey.
The average honey bee will make only one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its life. A thousand worker bees gathering nectar from four million flowers will make approximately two pounds of honey.
The hierarchy of a beehive:
Queen – lives for 2-3 years and is the only bee that lays eggs; up to 2500 a day.
Worker Bee – lives 6-8 weeks, are all female and do all the work.
Drones – all male, do no work, have no sting; primary function – to mate with the queen.
The buzzing sound a honey bee produces is made by its wings, which can beat up to 11,400 times a minute. A bee can fly non-stop for up to 6 miles with a top speed of 15 miles per hour.
Worker bees have a sting to protect themselves, but once they’ve stung a human they will die. It’s estimated that 1100 honey bee stings are required to be fatal.
