
The shot is taken from the edge of the leaf, at a point where there’s a gap in her enveloping ‘cocoon’. The view is of the spider and her egg sac inside her enclosure on the holly leaf with swathes of silk above.
Did You Know..? The spider’s eggs are encased in a protective sac when laid. She further protects them by spinning a silken pouch around herself and the sac.
The female will lay up to 3000 eggs.
The sac not only protects the eggs from predators, but sustains a reasonably constant level of humidity.
The baby spiders will go through all larval stages while still inside their egg and hatch out as fully formed spiderlings.
