The ornamental cabbage and kale (brassica oleracea) are cultivated hybrids of the wild mustard plant, which originated on the shores of the Mediterranean. The mustard family also includes regular cabbages, kale, sprouts, cauliflower, turnips and broccoli.
Despite their common name and eye-catching uses, ornamental cabbages and kale are both edible, although not as succulent or flavorsome as varieties grown specifically for the table.
The ornamental cabbage and kale are hardy annuals, preferring acidic soil, cooler weather and plenty of light. In fact their colours become more vibrant after a few hard frosts.
