365 Day Photography Project Day 158: Into The Mouth (of a Nasturtium Flower)

A rainstorm had just passed, leaving tiny droplets on the mouth of an orange nasturtium flower. You can just see into the heart of the flower, beyond the fringed opening.

The Latin name nasturtium means ‘nose twister’ and refers to the look on someone’s face when experiencing the flavour of the edible peppery leaves.

Throughout history, nasturtiums have been considered a flower, vegetable, herb and on occasion, a fruit. King Louis XIV of France, who had the flowers planted all around the gardens of Versailles, considerably increased the rising popularity of nasturtiums as an ornamental flower.
