Most spiders have eight eyes (a few only have six), though whether six or eight, most spiders don’t have very good vision. Instead of relying on seeing their prey, they must rely on touch, taste and vibration, which they are highly tuned to do.
However, all spider eyes are not equal. Some eyes are dark in colour and clearly visible here, but eyes adapted for seeing in low light contain a layer of light reflecting crystals and appear a much less visible, lighter colour.
When it comes to light intensity, spider eye lenses have the equivalent of very low F-numbers and are better than most camera lenses in that respect. However, retinal receptor cells are very poor and give the spider’s images a very low resolution – much lower than the average human eye.
