365 Day Photography Project Day 566: [Berberis Darwinii] Origin of Species

Tiny yellow flowers of a Berberis Darwinii or Darwin’s berberis, also referred to as barberry, set against a beautiful, clear blue autumn sky.

The Berberis darwinii was discovered by Charles Darwin, hence it’s name, during the second of The Beagle’s voyages, in 1835. Even in the depths of Autumn, the barberry is in full bloom, in striking contrast to a backdrop of reds, browns, oranges and bare branches.

Most horticulturalists will probably tell you the barberry flowers in spring and fruits in the autumn, but nobody told this little evergreen, that bore it’s purple fruit all summer long.

The barberry’s leaves are similar to those of a holly bush, though not as prickly or such a deep green and it’s fruit a welcome source of nourishment for birds and other creatures.
