365 Day Photo Project Day 597: Carpet Beetle [Bugs]

The varied carpet beetle (Anthrenus verbasci) is undoubtedly a significant pest if it invades the home, as it munches away on all kinds of natural fibres, reeking havoc on fabrics, carpets and furniture.

Fortunately, this particular carpet beetle is outside, where it will hunt for the nests of wasps, bees, birds or possibly spider webs, to lay it’s eggs and provide newly hatched larvae with organic debris to feast upon, including feathers, dead insects and fur.

In it’s adult state, the carpet beetle is approximately 3-4mm in length, with black, brown, white and darkish yellow markings on it’s wing casings (elytra). As the insect matures the multi-coloured design will wear off and the beetle turns a plain black or brown colour.
