365 Day Photo Project Day 599: Slugish Iridescence

Eww, yuk, a slug! Is that your initial reaction..? What about if this fellow was sporting a shell, wouldn’t he instantly become more appealing and interesting..? Somehow, we don’t loathe snails as much as slugs, unless they’re munching on our precious plants – then they’re pretty much all the enemy!!

This baby slug, taking refuge in a cool, damp tree stump, appears virtually iridescent against the gloomy background; the application of flash for the shot is likely to be largely responsible for this.

Slugs, just like snails, belong to the gastrapoda class of molluscs and are also vulnerable to drying out, but unlike a snail, the slug has no built in home to shrink into and seal up to sustain moisture; instead he produces two forms of mucus – a thin, watery mucus spreads across the creature’s foot and aids mobility, denser mucus covers the whole of his body to keep him moistened.
