Despite the fact this European Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus) is apparently suspended Harry Potter style, in mid-air, she is in fact perching on her web, which in anchored to numerous points, out of view at either side and from the base. When you look really closely, you will see the occasional strand of silk, just where the light catches.
To provide you with some perspective, the shot is composed from underneath her web, focusing upwards and capitalizing on that cloudless blue sky. The spider is approximately 8-10mm in length, plus limbs. Cleary visible are the European Garden Spider’s distinctive, identifying markings; the cross-shaped design of white spots on her back and those magnificent stripey legs.
