The heart of an orchid (Orchidaceae), viewed through the ‘lip’ – specialist petals designed to provide a landing platform for pollinators.
The term orchid is from the Greek ‘órkhis’, which literally translates as ‘testicle’, owing to the appearance of the flower’s root (orchids were previously known as ‘ballockwort’).
Despite the fact that orchids are considered an uncommon sight in cooler climates, the quantity in their genus outnumbers mammalian species by four times and includes twice that of the number of bird varieties.
