365 Day Photo Project Day 636: Into The Mouth of an Orchid Flower

The heart of an orchid (Orchidaceae) flower.

The reproductive components of an orchid differ in composition from that of other flowers; male and female parts are fused into a single organ at the core of the flower, termed the column. At the very top end of this finger-like form, is situated a single anther containing masses of pollen, stored in individual ‘pollinia’.

The central yellow-colored structure is the orchid’s stigmatic surface area, which is sensitive to inbound pollen deposits from visiting insects as they land on the lip to nectar and in turn, collect pollen to deposit somewhere else.
