365 Day Photography Project Day 658: Hairy Legs and Staring Eyes [Spider]

A different arachnid today; this one is some sort of garden spider. She bears few distinctive markings, compared to for example, the European garden spider (Araneus diadematus), but does have hundreds of tiny hairs on her legs, that are punctuated with longer, thicker black hairs that resemble spines or bristles.

Each type of hair on a spider’s limbs performs a different function, mostly these are sensory and detect air currents, vibration and sound. Smaller hairs on the tip of each leg are chemo-sensitive and employed by the spider as a tasting mechanism.
